WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Hundreds of dogs designated as dangerous under state law now are living in Pennsylvania under strict control and confinement measures, according to an official with the state Department of Agriculture.

There currently are no laws in Pennsylvania that require a dangerous dog to be euthanized, department Communications Director Bonnie McCann said.

By the same token, the Antietam Humane Society is within its rights to deal with a designated dangerous dog as it deems fit, McCann said.

On Monday, a dog in the care of the society was euthanized after the state dog warden said the male German shepherd was going to be designated as a dangerous dog.

The dog had earlier been adopted, but was returned after an incident in which he jumped from a car window, bit a beagle and injured its owner, according to the shelter’s Facebook page.

The euthanasia of Kai set off a firestorm on social media, and the shelter on Lyons Road was vandalized between Monday at 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 12:30 a.m.

The Washington Township (Pa.) Police Department is investigating the case of criminal mischief that included “#SAVEKAI” being spray painted on a garage door on the west side of the building and on concrete next to the outside kennels, according to a police department news release.
