Changing a toilet seat is a non-glamorous home necessity—whether you need to switch out a broken one, want a new style, or it’s simply time to replace it. What You Need:

  • New toilet seat
  • Tape measure
  • Wrench
  • Sponge
  • Soap


    1. Before buying a new toilet seat, measure your current one:
    2. Measure the distance between the bolts where the seat attaches to the bowl. The typical distance is 5 1/2 inches.
    3. Determine the width of the bowl at its widest point.
    4. Measure the length of the bowl between the seat bolts and the bowl’s front edge.
    5. Choose a new toilet seat based on those measurements. The options range from high-impact plastic to materials like wood coated in plastic.
