THE tormented family of a missing 15-year-old feared murdered by Fred West are “very sad” police found no body buried under a cafe.
The latest development means the mystery surrounding Mary Bastholm’s 53-year disappearance continues.
The schoolgirl was last seen on 6 January 1968 waiting for a bus to go and see her boyfriend.
She is believed to have been murdered by depraved Fred West, who was a regular at the Clean Plate cafe in Gloucester where she worked as a waitress, but police have found no remains.
Mary’s family have now thanked police and a TV production team whose work launched the search at the cafe.
They said: “We are still very sad that Mary has not been found.
“We were hoping to get final closure on her disappearance so that we could put her to rest.
“We have been open-minded throughout this process and we now know the cafe can be ruled out.
“We can however hold out some hope that one day Mary will be found.”
The heartbroken family also paid tribute to the “strong-willed, happy-go-lucky teenager dearly loved by her parents and two brothers”.
They added: “She enjoyed life and was just coming into her own when her life was tragically cut short.
“Her parents and two brothers were never the same after she went missing.
“They have now sadly passed away without ever knowing what happened to their loving daughter and sister.”
